Lord Ayyappan Jayanthi is observed every year on Panguni Uthiram, the day of Uthiram star which falls on Pournami or Full Moon day of Panguni month (March-April) in Meena masam of Malayali calendar.


 In 2020, Ayyappan Jayanthi comes in April 6, the Day of Incarnation of Lord Ayyappa.

With Abhaya mudra on his fingers represents fearlessness, wearing a golden bell (mani) around his neck (kandan) and also mounts on top of the tiger, which is his vehicle carrying bow and arrow.

On this auspicious day, Our Cute little Sharva #BalAyyappa adorned with golden jewelry and silk dhoti with a crown on his head and garland, carrying bow and arrow mounted on tiger and in the other pic, he himself seated on top of the stairs – so called 18 divine steps  gives the complete divine feeling to the attire.

 This day is auspicious for marriages and other ceremonies. It is believed that most of the divine marriages took place on this day, like Parvati and Lord Shiva, Murugan and Deivanai, and Aandaal and Rangamannar and Lord Rama and Goddess Sita.

This day is celebrated as Lord Ayyappan Jayanti. Lord Ayyappan was born out of the spiritual union of Lords Shiva and Vishnu (as Mohini).

 Ayyappa - The Divine Child of Shiva and Vishnu! So called Hariharan Puthran  or Hariharaputra, literally means the son of both Hari – Vishnu and Haran – Shiva.

This day attracts millions of people to Sabarimala, the abode of Lord Ayyappa. It is the most important pilgrim center. 

In Sabarimalai Ayyappa temple, Ayyappa Jayanti is celebrated with great zeal and fervour from all around the world.

Irrespective of caste or creed, every year millions of devotees with garland and irumudis on the head, chanting Mantra “Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa” which means “Lord Ayyappa I seek refuge in you”, and bathe in the holy river Pampa, climb up the 18 stairs – divine steps, Pathinettampadi  hoping to catch a glimpse of Lord Ayyappa, the Dharmasastha.

The first 5 steps represents senses – Vision, Hearing, Smell, Taste and Touch.

The next 8 represents human failings – Desire, Anger, Greed, Lust, Pride, Unhealthy, Competition, Jealousy, and Boastfulness.

The next 3 represents qualities – Clarity, Activity, and Inertia.

The last 2 represents – Knowledge and Ignorance.

The devotees then descend the steps – walking backwards without seeing the lord. The fact that nobody can mount those 18 sacred steps, without undertaking 41 days of fasting.

Sabarimala is not open to all. Men of all age group can go to Sabarimala, but only women below the age of 10 and above the age of 50 are allowed.

Ayyappa devotees have their usual dress code like black and dark blue shirt or saffron dhoti. It symbolizes that controls mind during the period of Vratham(fasting).
