Durga Puja
is celebrated every year in a grand manner in west Bengal, particularly in
Kolkata, on the same day as Navaratri, a nine-night festival celebrating the
divine feminine with decorated bamboo structures of Pandals at various places.
The
Celebrations differ based on the place, customs and beliefs. Somewhere it is
for seven or ten days. Begins with Shasthi – sixth day and ends with
VijayaDashami – the tenth day.
It is
celebrated during the last five days of Navaratri and Dussehra. In 2019, Durga
puja takes place from October 4 to 7, namely Saptami, Ashtami, Navami and
Vijayadashami followed by immersing the Goddess Durga Idols into the holy river
the Ganges on October 8.

Goddess
Durga Maa riding a lion or tiger, attacking the demon king Mahishasura. She was
called by all the three Lords – Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu in order to save the
world from cruelty. This battle went for ten days, and finally she defeated the
evil. We celebrated the tenth day as Dussehra or Vijayadashami.

This
Festival honors the powerful female force (shakti) in the Universe.
The word Navaratri,
Nava means nine and ratri means nights. During these nine nights and ten days, the
Goddess Durga in the nine forms of Shakthi are to be worshipped.

Our little
Goddess Devi Durga Maa sitting on a tiger adorned with jewellery and a Red silk
saree, Crown on her head, Garland, and each hand holding weapons gives a
complete feeling to the attire.
List of
weapons she carries: Trishul, Conch and Lotus on the right side, whereas Discus
- Chakra, Sword, Mace on the left side.
May Goddess
Durga strengthen you to fight all the evils, and give you the courage to face
